Spirulina is a supplement that derives its name from two species of microscopic spiral shaped blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) named Arthrospira platensis, and Arthrospira maxima. It is cultivated, harvested and manufactured as a dietary supplement (tablets) …as well as a whole food (powder and flakes) for human consumption as well as a feed supplement for the poultry industry.
Comprised of mostly protein (over 50% by dry weight) that is considered a complete or whole protein because it contains all of the essential amino acids, it is also rich in B vitamins, vitamins C, D and E.
Spirulina is beneficial to human health in that it is a strong supporter of the immune system and a healthy inflammatory response because of its antioxidant properties, as suggested by several noted scientific studies.
